Description
The Right Rev. Lemuel H. Wells was a Missionary Bishop of Spokane. This hardcover book, c1931, 157 pages is his life story. He was b. in Yonkers, NY in 1841 son of Horace D. Wells and Mary Barker Wells. He prepared for ministry at Berkeley Divinity School & was ordained a Deacon in 1869. After graduation from Berkeley, Wells m. Elizabeth Folge. The marriage was short-lived, as Elizabeth died following a year spent in Europe. Wells, a newly ordained priest, was asked to become rector of a struggling mission in Walla Walla, WA. In 1872, during his 2nd year as rector in Walla Walla, Wells founded the St. Paul's Girl's School. In 1880, Wells m. the principal of St. Paul's Girl's School, Henrietta Garretson. He established 31 Episcopal Missions in WA, Oregon, and Idaho. These missions included the 1st Episcopal congregations in 22 cities of WA, Idaho, and Oregon. It was Wells who determined on Spokane, WA as his See city, and he & his wife moved from Tacoma to Spokane after Wells was consecrated as the 1st Bishop of Spokane in New Haven, CT in 1892. One of the Wells' 1st acts in Spokane was to found another girls' school - Brunot Hall. He also founded St. Luke's Hosp., Spokane. In 1915, Wells retired as Bishop of Spokane, His report read as follows: "When I first came to Eastern WA as a missionary in 1871 I found only 6 communicants of the Church & nothing more in this whole district; no clergymen, no institutions. Now we have 3,000 communicants, 20 clergymen, with 22 lay readers, ministering to 60 churches and missions. --3 boarding and day schools with 20 teachers & 200 pupils, a hospital with 50 beds; a Church home for children with room for 25 orphans." Bishop Wells & his 3rd wife moved to Tacoma in their retirement. In 1931, Wells memoirs were published as "A Pioneer Missionary." Wells died in 1936. This book, then, is his life story.--a very interesting book -- Amazon.
