Description
It all started casually enough by my asking a reference librarian at the now demolished old Seattle Public Library for some activity I might engage in which could benefit the library. My momentary decision was prompted not by a charitable impulse, but rather was brought on by a feeling of frustration and just plain boredom. No sooner had I made my brash request, which was quite contrary to my normal behavior, than I regretted it, but I needn't have worried about facing possible frowns or even a suggestion that I should go home and take a nap. The librarian acted as if the request had been expected, excused herself for a moment and upon her return handed me a small piece of paper on which were typed a few addresses a library patron had left of lesser known historical markers and monuments.
As a relative newcomer to the Northwest, its history hadn't been foremost in my mind and I am sorry to say certainly not on that quiet Saturday afternoon so long ago. My curiosity was aroused however, and not only did I find and photograph the suggested markers, but have kept going ever since. -- Excerpt from Preface to Index.
